Director of Photography Phil Barthropp was born in London, but grew up in Mauritius and Bahrain where he developed his great affinity with the sea.
He joined the BBC and spent the next 15 years gaining experience
in all aspects of broadcasting from live events to drama, sports events and music, film and video.
After going freelance, he specialized in underwater camera work, shooting on all formats including 16mm and 35mm, working on natural history
to feature films.
Seeing the potential of the 'digital revolution'
he was one of the earliest adopters
of the Red One 'Digital Cinema'
cameras and has now built up
a comprehensive kit including
a full set of cine lenses to
complement his collection of the latest large format cinema cameras.
He has won many awards for his work.
“In the blink of an eye” won a gold for best
cinematography at the New York film festival 2011.
Other films have had great success in Cannes and
at the UK Ivca awards.
His work covers many genres,
from BBC drama to Formula One,
Sports Personality of the year to comic relief,
commercials and virals campaigns,
documentaries and natural history.
Phil Barthropp’s experience is extensive and international,
his ability to understand the needs of the production and
his crew at all levels, coupled with his artistic and
technical talents make him respected and an
invaluable asset on any film set.
